CHAPTER XIV
ON THE TRAIL
âwhere is this Castillo nowTâ Frank asked je proprietor of El Matador, hanging eagerly the answer.
âI donât know,â wan the disappointing reply. f Probably working at something that has noth-to do with bullfighting.â The Hardys had finished their meal. As the etective paid the bill, he again thanked the ler for permitting them to eat and laugh-jly suggested that he let them out a side door, the street, their troubles began again. âWeâd better take a taii and go to the sta-on,â suggested Mr. Hardy. âIâm sure Joe auld be most apt to wait for us there. If he xât there, weâll take a train to Aberdeen. I ft some papers at the hotel I must pick up.â It was some time before they could find a to take them. Two drivers looked at teir clothes askance and would not stop. A rd let them get in but insisted upon being lid his fare before moving!
âThereâll be a train in twenty minutes,â rank told his father when they reached the ation and spoke to the agent. âThatâll give

âYes, itâs I,â grinned Joe, who seemed to have appeared from nowhere. âHello, Dad, Iâm certainly glad to see you. Weâd better not stay around here. Follow me.â
Pleased and relieved, Fenton Hardy walked rapidly after his two excited sons. Joe led the way to the rear of the depot, then halted and peered around furtively.
âWeâre not safe anywhere in this city,â he whispered. âGordon, Hinchman and the rest are after us, Iâm certain of that. They think we know too much 1â
âFrom their point of view, I guess we do,â smiled the detective. âI wish we had more evidence. An arrest now wouldnât prove much.â
âIâve hidden our truck in a barn outside of town and taken off the Klondike signs. I think we ought to get out there right away. Weâll have to take a taxi-â he looked at his father- âbut weâd better be careful which one.â
âWait here and Iâll get a cab,â said Frank.
He slipped away and watched a line of cars alongside the station. Satisfied at last that no suspicious-looking characters were driving them he summoned one. In a jiffy he had signaled to Joe and Mr. Hardy and all three got in.
âNumber 38 Grove Pike,â ordered Joe in a low voice, and the cab chugged off.
Frank gazed at his brother expectantly. âWhat happened after I left you, Joe? Did they catch you with the boxes ?â
The younger lad made a wry face. âPretty

jrly, but not quite,â he whispered. âI went i unloading them after you left. All of a sud-Jen, just as I had finished, Hinchman came Idown to the platform. He didnât recognize me, he wanted to know what our truck had brought.â
Frank leaned toward his brother eagerly. ââWhat did you do then?â
Joe chuckled. âI said I was just a hired *4river and didnât know anything about what I â
had carried.
